[OOM] Eiattu - Safe Quarters

The princess and her husband share a look, a 'here goes nothing' sort of look (even if it's everything more than nothing), and then she turns away and says into the comm, "Go."

They stand side by side in the closed conference room, a few trusted aides and guards and new Cabinet members at hand, and they watch the action in the heart of the northwest jungles unfold via shaky holo connection. This time, though, this time it goes right. The Eiatti royal forces move in on the base -- and it's there, hidden deep in the jungle; those prisoners told the truth -- and the Prims apparently had no idea it was coming. They're undisciplined and they scatter and they don't even utilize their pitiful squadron of snubfighters, the best of their weapons. The soldiers flee and so, for that matter, do the older nobles.

It gets ugly for a few moments; one count and some soldiers turn and fight, with a good position behind a heavy laser cannon, and Plourr starts to issue orders over the comm. Rial's hand on her arm stops her; she glances at him and she remembers what they'd agreed on -- the military personnel at the scene would be in charge. So she stands back and she grits her teeth and it's one of the hardest things she's done. She can't stand being useless, even if Rial's hand squeezing hers helps.

In the end, her frustration doesn't matter. The count and the cannon explode, the base is taken and ransacked, and all salvageable equipment is removed. And then, for good measure, the low-lying building is razed to the ground. It's one hell of a blow for the Priamsta; it's a death knell, says one aide jubilantly, but neither Plourr or Rial will believe it til the prerecorded message comes on the Holonet a few hours later.

Plourr, at least, can't believe it all ended this easily.

"In conclusion," says the portly, self-important Count Saume, "the Priamsta only wish for the end of this tragic waste of life. Therefore, the Priamsta are prepared to offer a ceasefire and a general truce, so that discussions of peace and unity may commence."

Plourr hits pause for what feels like the umpteenth time, and the white-haired count freezes with his fat mouth half-open. Sitting in bed with her legs crossed gracefully under herself at the end of a long day, Plourr lifts her datapad to her eyes again. The demands feel like they've been burned into her retinas, but she rereads them all the same. The Prims have named the place, the date, the time; the when the where the how the why -- and the who. They want to speak to her, unsurprisingly. She sighs, lowers the datapad, rewinds the holo, and starts it over again, watching Saume closely.

"To the good people of Eiattu IV..."
